A dehydrator dries food by using heat only, while a freeze dryer uses both cold and heat. Dehydrated food still has moisture in it and works for short term storage only.

Ice is then turned into vapor by applying heat while simultaneously lowering the surrounding pressure during sublimation. During the remaining phase, moisture that is loosely bound is removed in order to bring about sufficient stability for the product to be stored for longer periods of time.  

Automation and control features are equally important in dry freezing machinery. Remote monitoring, remote data access, and real time data tracking automation improves process consistency by reducing manual input.

The process involves freezing the food and then reducing the surrounding pressure to allow the frozen water in the food to sublimate directly into vapor. This method is particularly effective for fruits, vegetables, meats, and even complete meals.

I freeze dry right now so I can have as much preserved food as possible. For me, it’s a lot cheaper in the long run, even with the initial investment and run time.

Out of caution, I have only ever taken mylar bags in a checked bag and I’ve never had a problem. I know of people who have taken them in carry-on bags as well without more info issues.

Lean meats work very well. Meats can be freeze dried either raw or cooked. If you are processing beef or pork, be sure to remove as much fat as possible first.

The system’s shelf heaters and adjustable vacuum pressure ensure controlled sublimation during the primary drying cycle, preserving your materials at peak quality.
